Pesticides and Parkinson’s Disease in Rats

A new study released at a meeting of the Society for Neuroscience on Monday, Nov. 6, shows that a certain species of rat develops a clinical and neurological syndrome almost identical to human Parkinson’s disease when exposed intravenously to a “natural” pesticide called rotenone.

Using Sperm Preserved Before Radiation Therapy

Q.My husband is 41, and I’m 28. He is sterile from radiation therapy 10 years ago. His doctor at that time suggested he donate sperm before the treatment. He did so, and the sperm are still frozen in a medical lab. What are the chances of us being able to conceive, assuming all is normal with me and I am fertile? Also, what would be the process of fertilization? Would drugs be involved? He gave only one donation (ejaculation) for freezing. How many children could we have? Would I have to have them in a single pregnancy? (more…)

Providing premium assistance for low-income Medicare beneficiaries. While the financial details are still being worked out, it is likely that those living below the low-income cut-off point (probably between 135 percent and 150 percent of the poverty level) would have a basic, privately offered drug program paid for in full. Beneficiaries with certain incomes slightly above the full subsidy cut-off would be eligible for partial support, with the subsidy phasing out as income rose. (more…)

Coverage for 50 percent of an enrollee’s pharmacy costs to a maximum benefit payable of $1,000 the first year, rising each year to a maximum benefit of $2,500 by 2011.

A catastrophic benefit for drug charges in excess of the maximum. The details of this program have not been worked out yet. Clinton and Gore have budgeted $35 billion to pay for this benefit from 2006 to 2010. (more…)

The Medicare program does not currently cover outpatient prescription drugs. With pharmacy prices skyrocketing, this has become a huge election year issue, particularly among seniors who vote in large numbers.

On the pharmacy issue, the Democrats have been on the offensive. The Clinton/Gore administration has proposed a new drug benefit. The Democrats in Congress have put passing a standalone drug benefit high on their priority list. (more…)

Serious mental illness

Seriously Mentally Ill (SMI) individuals have mental illnesses that are persistent, serious, and disruptive of everyday life, unless controlled. The majority are served through state- and/or federally-funded programs. For the 22,454 seriously mentally ill people receiving mental health services from the state of Arizona (ADHS/DBHS 1998), state legislators are the “insurer” determining whether the perceived value of medications and treatments is worth the anticipated cost.
